Ooty or Udhgamandalam as it is locally known is a city situated on the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats. Ooty has long been renowned for its great natural beauty and landscapes and also for its beautiful, pleasing climate. Due to its pleasant climate and proximity to nature, Ooty had served as a summer retreat during the early British Raj and at one time was also the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. The quaint little town still bears the marks of the British rule in the colonial Bungalows and gardens that the British laid out for their pleasure. One such garden has become the tourist landmark of the town- The Ooty Botanical gardens. The Ooty Botanical gardens are situated near the town ...
... and have a terraced layout which means the garden has been laid out in the shape of steps cut out from the mountain. The Botanical garden was laid out during the pre-independence era in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale while the architect was William Graham McIvor. The garden was initially laid out for the purpose of growing vegetables for the European residents as they had to depend on outside traders. It was later converted into a Public park and is now maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture department. The park has the finest collection of rare plants in India and even has some exotic trees and bonsai’s. The park’s layout with flowering plants, lily ponds and trees, etc. makes it quite attractive and enjoyable. The best specimen here is a fossilized tree trunk that is said to be more than 20 million years old. One of the highlights of the garden is the Annual Flower Show that is held in the summer months. The show was started way back in 1896 and is still held today. The beauty of the area is also bewitching making the garden visit doubly interesting.
