Basic Information About Pinhole Glasses

Many people do not know about pinhole glasses. There are two types of pinhole glasses. One is traditional pinholes having flat or slightly curved lenses of plastic with actual holes punched through them. The holes restrict ultraviolet light to reach the eyes.

Another type of pinhole glasses is modern pinhole having solid curved lenses of the same clear plastic used for the prescription glasses. This lens provides full ultraviolet protection. The pinhole pattern is printed at the back in ink and a mild mirror coating is added in front to help hide the pinhole patterns from others.

Pinholes can be used as Sunglasses, Computer Glasses and Myopia prevention Glasses. pinhole glasses are also known as stenopeic glasses. Cataract patients can also see clear through pinhole glasses.

Limitations of pinhole glasses are blocking some lights make it more important than usual to have good lighting on the viwed object even though the sharper image greatly compensates for the diminished light. Another limitation is that peripheral vision is diminished. Pinholes can not replace prescription glasses in every situation. Young people who are farsighted should not use pinholes or any other glasses that reduce accommodation.

Pinhole glasses have a legitimate use of preventing acquired myopia. When pinholes are used for reading or other close works it reduces the amount of accommodation or focusing power that the eye must use to see clearly. Pinholes are harmless, minus lenses must be avoided.

Many parents will not allow their children to use bifocals to reduce the stress of close work because such glasses are for old people. Pinholes are easier things to accept because they are same for all ages. Children with special needs often use their peripheral vision and pinholes help them to concentrate on detail better.
