Enrolling in defensive-driving courses is a good way for us to improve on our road skills - after all no one can claim to be a perfect driver. Finishing one is also a great way to plea for lower penalties to traffic violations we have incurred, or to qualify for premium auto insurance discounts.

The only problem is, much as we want to sign-up for one; it is a time-hungry activity, needing us to turn in six- to eight-hours of being in the courses. And then, there's the common compliant we hear of boring driving lessons. Some companies try to make up for it by making their courses more interactive, engaging and visual to the student.  But if despite this modifications, this isn't still the lessons for you, is there a way out?

There are others who shun the classroom lessons altogether but tune in to a defensive driving course on the Net or through DVD. These particular types of classes are more attractive since the student gets to have more hand in cutting up the lessons into blocks of learning time. So is this one for you?

Caution, though. Before you enroll to an online defensive driving course, ...
... there are a few things you need to be check before hand. First, know that online and DVD courses are not accredited in all parts of the country. Be sure that it is recognized in your state, or else, you might find that your time and investment just went down the drain. Second, ensure that the course satisfies the terms of any court order or employment requirement. Third, inquire from your auto insurance provider about the discounts that this online or DVD course can qualify for you.

There are many advantages for taking the online route in defensive driving lessons. First is that you could choose your pace.  But online courses are also differently designed. Other lessons may allow you to have a pause in your lessons to feed the dog, check the cake you're baking, send an email, or talk to your spouse and kids. Most online defensive driving courses were designed to let you go from where you left off automatically, once you're logged back in.

But some people don't have the discipline to stay focused if they are in a non-structured environment. So, while it is convenient to work in the comforts of your home, this can be a problem for some people who have a hard time dividing their priorities if it is solely up to them.

So, another online lesson design may be the more appropriate choice for these kinds of defensive driving learners. Specifically the kind of lesson which does not allow one to interrupt the course, for any reason. And then you have of course the defensive-driving course offered in a traditional classroom. Normally a five to 8 unit course, you can finish it in one sitting.

Ultimately, the choice of how a course is handled depends on one's personality. Know yourself and how best you can manage your schedule and how you could maximize your learning potential should be the compass for your selection. If you are the type who prefers a more structured setting, take a classroom course. But if your personality allows you to focus even in the midst of chaos, or even just tiny disturbances as you work, then an online course might be your best bet.
