Wedding photos are among the most cherished pieces of

our history we can own. They are keepsakes that reflect

a special time and place and can be shared with

generations for years to come.

This is why it is so important to select a wedding

photographer that is trusted, understands your

personality and can put you and your betrothed in a

setting that reflects who you are and what you mean to

one another.

You’re going to spend a lot of time planning your

wedding. Don’t let the photography take a back seat to

the catering or the flowers or the dress. Follow these

steps for finding a photographer that will document your

special day and provide you with lasting treasures for

you and your family to enjoy for years.

Know who you are: Decide what style of wedding

photography best suits you and your partner. Some prefer

a traditional style with standard shots, while others

like candid photos and off-beat, unplanned moments to

stand as representations of their big day. Once you know

what ...
... you like, it’s much easier to pin down a

photographer that has an eye for you preferences.

Create a budget and needs list: There are no rules when

it comes to wedding photos. You can select a wedding

photographer that will do only your service and perhaps

the rehearsal dinner, while letting friends and even

well-placed instant cameras do the documenting of the

reception for you. It’s up to you!
Do you do it all? With digital technology, you have a

choice about how you can receive your photos. You can

ask your wedding photographer to provide you with a disc

that allows you to then create your own wedding album.

But you may not be that interested or adept at the

digital photography option and may want to avoid seeing

that disc collect dust for decades and have the

photographer do it all for you.
Set Your Budget: Photography is an art and, as such,

comes with fees that include fees. Experts suggest that

your wedding budget set aside just over 10% for

photography. Once you know your budget for the entire

event, you can easily start shopping for photographers

that are affordable and take a bite out of your cake

money.
Do Your homework:. Get referrals from friends, bridal

shops, event location managers and online social media

sties about local photographers. Ask to see samples of

their work and even get a few referrals so you can find

out from brides and grooms directly what their

experience was working with the photographer they

selected.
Do Your Due Diligence: When interviewing prospective

photographers, ask if they have insurance, what the

sales tax will be and if they come with back up cameras

in case there are issues with their equipment last

minute.
Meet Them In Person: Don’t rely on the Internet alone to

help you decide who might be a good fit for your wedding

photography needs. Set an appointment, meet them

face-to-face and create a relationship with them by

talking to them, finding out how they work and what

their personality is like
Decide Together: Let your partner in on the process. Sit

down together and review all the options available to

you and make a decision about which photographer you

enjoyed meeting the most, whose work stands out for you

and which of the options is going to best suit both of

your expectations.
Pre-set a Date: Have your selected photographer pencil

in your date and then, set a date to sign a contract.

Dates go fast in the wedding business, so you don’t want

to assume anything and the sooner you have a secured

date the easier it will be to focus on other things,

like the dress, and the food, and the venue and on and

on it goes.
Early Bird Special: It’s not too soon to set

appointments and confirm at six and even eight months

out. And, remember, a contract is only a piece of paper.

Stay closely connected to your photographer as you move

closer to your date. Meet with them a few weeks prior to

your wedding to re-confirm and hammer out any

last-minute details, and then reconnect the day prior to

your wedding for one last run through.
