Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment: A Good Treatment For Damaged Tendon
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) healing is a new, simple and non-surgical procedure which is used in the treatment of joint injuries and arthritis. It amalgamates advanced technology with the body's natural ability to heal itself. The PRP is a concentration of platelets, which can help in speeding up the healing process. This is because platelets are composed of packets of growth hormones and cytokines that instruct the tissues to augment restoration and improve healing. As soon as PRP is injected into the injured area, a mild inflammatory reaction is stimulated which triggers the healing process. This is followed by growth of new cells and tissue regeneration, resulting in quick healing of soft tissue injuries.
For getting the PRP concentration, a sample of blood will be taken from your arm which will be placed in a centrifuge. This is required to separate the blood cells from the plasma, so that the concentration of the platelets can be extracted. This procedure hardly takes about 15 minutes. The final PRP product is then injected into the injured area under ultrasound guidance. Since PRP is received from your own blood, ...
... there should be no fear of disease transmission. Moreover, PRP contains a good amount of white blood cells which has an anti-bacterial property to eradicate infection.
Platelet rich plasma treatment greatly increases your healing potential by at least six times. Gradually it is proving to be a good and natural substitute to steroid injections. This may reduce the need for more aggressive treatments like surgery or long-term dependency on medication. After a severe tendon injury, you need to visit a doctor who will review your medical history and try to determine if you are a good candidate for PRP therapy. The doctor will obtain your blood sample and examine the area to be treated. Under ultrasound guidance, the PRP will be injected into the damaged area and joint support tissues. After administrating the PRP you will have to stay back for a 15 minutes observation period. The process may be repeated few times over a period of six to sixteen week, depending on the severity of your injury.
You are likely to experience mild temporary discomfort for one week after the platelet rich plasma therapy. This happens because of stimulation of the inflammatory response, which is essential for healing. You can apply ice on the affected area to minimise the possibility of uneasiness. Your doctor can suggest you to take certain analgesic medications to get relief while the PRP starts healing process. A therapeutic exercise program can prove to be extremely helpful during this period. It is important to keep in mind that you should not disturb the injection spot for at least two days. It is strictly advised to refrain from vigorous physical activities for getting the maximum benefits from the PRP therapy. In case of any doubt, you must visit an experienced doctor who can tell whether you are an ideal PRP candidate or not.
