Useful Tips For Portrait Photography
Portrait photography is the photography of a person or group of people displaying their moods, personality, or emotion. These people pictures can be a portrait where the objects pose to get clicked or they can be candid shots. However be the position of the subject, the photographer must ensure to keep in mind the elements of composition and technique to convey what he's trying to say through the picture. A few tips might come in handy.
Get Closer
The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. If you approach people in the right way, they'll usually be more than willing to have their picture clicked. Practice with people you know so that you are comfortable; people can sense when you aren't.
Background Settings
The settings in which you take pictures of people are important because they add to the viewer's understanding of your subject. The setting provides information about people and tells us something about their lives. You should aim to seek balance between subject and environment. The backdrop should not overpower the subject.
Unobtrusive ...
... Candid
When you take photographs of people going about their business-a crowd at sports event, vendors in a market, the line at a theatre, you don't want them to appear aware of the camera. There are several ways to be unobtrusive. You can find a place to sit that gives you a good view of the place and does not make the subject conscious of your clicking them.
When they do notice you, simply smile and wave. There's a huge difference between unfriendly and unobtrusive. Another way to be unobtrusive is to be at the setting long enough so that people stop paying attention to you like in a café.
Anticipating Behavior
An important element in people photography is to know your subjects well enough to be able to anticipate what they are going to do. That's the only way you can get pictures of it. The key is to watch people carefully and always have your camera ready.
Engaging Your Subject
The first order of business is to engage your subject. This is where we all need to learn how to overcome our shyness and approach people in an open and friendly manner. Take time to engage the person in a conversation, similar to how you would if you didn't have a camera.
Approaching Unfamiliar Cultures
One of the keys to success in photographing cultures different from your own is doing as much research as you can before you go. Another key to success is to be sensitive to local customs and the different reactions people may have to you and your camera
Familiar Subjects
Our family members are the people we photograph most frequently. These photographs are our memories made real and are probably the most important pictures we will ever click or have. You should apply thought and technique just as scrupulously into photographing your family as you do to any other photo assignment. You'd get no better group on which to practice photography. With your family, you can work on getting a similar moment again and again, and again.
