Why A Cheap Hotel Might Not Be So Bad After All

A lot of people tend to scoff at the idea of staying at a budget motel. "The EconoLodge is simply not an option!" the think, "We must find somewhere more accommodating!" These sentiments generally rise out of misconceptions surrounding the nature of a budget motel itself. Most people picture a motel that costs under $75.00 a night as being dirty, smelly and full of vice-indulgent hoodlums. However this is not always the case! In fact, you may be surprised to learn of the quality of a room you can along the way to your destination!
It actually makes a lot of sense to stay in a budget motel under certain circumstances. If you happen to be traveling long distances with a few buddies or even by yourself, there is no reason to waste money grabbing an expensive room every night you spend resting from the drive. If you're not trying to impress a significant other and you're only stopping there overnight between long stretches of driving, you won't need more than a clean bed and a TV. Name brand (also called "chain") budget motels can provide this at a price that seems almost too good to be true. Popular brand name motels include ...
... the Howard Johnson's, EconoLodge, Motel 6 and the Ramada.
This isn't to say that there is no such thing as the dirt floor, moldy walls and stained bed motel. They certainly exist, and you will want to be aware of how to spot them before entering their lobby. Avoid any motels that bear names you have never heard of. Something like "The McGuinty Inn" should be scrutinized carefully before patronized. That is because this motel is privately owned and does not have to adhere to the standards that are imposed on the chain motels. The exterior appearance of the motel is also a good barometer for what to expect on the inside. If the grass is kept, the siding is clean and the windows are washed, you'll probably have a descent night's sleep. If, on the other hand, there are weeds climbing to the roof, missing shingles and an over-all filthy appearance, you might never want to see what the inside looks like!
Over all, many budget hotels can be a prudent decision and a money saving companion on your travels. If you know how to spot them and you're not on a romantic get-away with that special someone, budget motels are a great way to rest up on the road!
