Studio photography gives you the benefit of setting up the stage just as you would want it. However, whether you do a fine job of it or not is entirely your responsibility. Just so that you don't end up cursing yourself for a job that could have been done better, here's a guide for that perfect shot!

Rent or Buy a Studio

If it's a one-off assignment that you are dealing with, you can rent out the studio and equipment and modify it according to your needs. If you indulge in photography on a regular basis, then better buy your own stuff. You can take off anytime you want for an impromptu shoot.

Floor or Ceiling Studio

While setting up the studio, carefully plan if you want it to be floor based or ceiling based. A floor based studio will have light stands and other equipment strewed across the floor. A ceiling based photography studio has background rollers and a rail system mounted on the ceiling. You can adjust the lighting etc. by simply pulling it down. A bit more expensive than keeping it floor based, but then you need not worry about tripping over the stands and wires.

Lighting Your Studio

The ...
... lighting is the most important aspect. This is dependent on the type of camera you would be using for studio photography and the objects that will be photographed. Smaller objects like humans need less lighting as compared to bigger objects like automobiles.

You have the option of utilising the sunlight coming in through the windows in your studio. Remember that photography done in sunlight in a studio is different from that done out in the open as outside photography combines sunlight and skylight to give that effect.

Be careful about installing and using hot lights in your studio. Though they help you picture the final output but end up making you sweaty and the surroundings hot in the process. Also, ensure that the supporting equipment is able to handle the heat of the hot light and the studio does not come burning down. You can use a warm light or a fluorescent light bulb instead. Having cold lights or more commonly known flash bulbs is also a good idea. They give better output in the absence of natural ambient lighting.

Whichever source of lighting you choose, make sure that it is popular in studio photography so that you can get its accessories easily and can also control the lighting. Diffusers will help in not casting a shadow as is mostly done by hot lights.

Creating the right background

For the background for your studio photography, you can go in for seamless paper. It comes in rolls and different colours. Muslin is also another standard background for studio photography.

For Support and Added Glamour

Though you can manage your camera in the studio all by yourself without any support; however, when using hot lights, it's necessary that you capture still images. Use a tripod or a studio stand for those perfect pictures.
Finally, you can enhance your studio photography further by using accessories like fog machine, coloured filters, wind machine etc. to give that natural effect to studio photography.
