Adding Your Newborn To Your Health Insurance Plan
My eyes were heavy and yearned for a few moments of sleep.but I wasn't ready. Lying on my bed, I couldn't help but stare at this perfect baby boy. Sound asleep in the bassinet right next to me, I gingerly picked up his little hand and inspected it for the 10th time today. He smelled of soft baby shampoo and I yearned to wake him up, just for the chance to hold him again.
That exact moment in time I knew one thing for sure: I would never let any harm fall upon my son, if I could help it. The next morning I jumped on the phone with my health insurance agent. I wanted to make sure my little one was immediately added to our policy, but wasn't sure how to go about it.
My agent first informed me that it was good I had waited until after the birth. Many parents try to get their newborn added before the actual delivery, which can't be done. Without a definite name and sex of the baby, you can't add them to your policy.
A social security number is also needed to get them "officially" added. Realistically speaking, most parents end up taking their baby to the doctor before the social security card comes ...
... in the mail. In order to accommodate this, a temporary insurance card is usually issued.
My insurance agent stressed to me how important it was that I call sooner than later to get our little one added. Unfortunately, many parents wait until life calms down a bit to get their baby added to the policy. Most insurance companies can deny coverage if the baby isn't added within 30 days of birth. Not wanting to be stuck with lofty medical expenses, I was grateful to have made the call!

Perfectly aware of the long days and nights ahead of me, I was able to sleep a little better that night. I was doing my best to ensure the health and vitality of my son. With such a precious commodity in my possession, how could I risk having them be without some type of health insurance?
