Upcycling Art – Modern Art From Junk
Upcycling is a form of recycling where waste materials, as well as useless products are converted into new products or materials, bringing better quality or helping to a superior environmental value. The term “upcycling” seems to have been used for the first time by German engineer Reiner Pilz in 1994. One way to bring new values from recycled materials and products is what we call now “recycled art” or “upcycling art”. Modern artists, or more exactly, many of them, discovered the huge potential of recycled stuff in giving birth to pieces of art which satisfy two social needs: an artistic expression and a better environment.
For many people, the concept of upcycling as a new way of life is vague, but this term has triggered a fantastic emulation inside the artistic community. Upcycling art is perhaps the art of doing something from nothing. The artists often create works out of waste and demonstrate that there is beauty even in the most common things. This way, by means of recycled art, trash is demonstrated to be a real treasure. Not to mention that these artists save money by using less costly supplies. ...
... Such individual efforts are good evidence of how people can separate themselves from the waste cycle and what profits the zero-waste living style could bring to the society.
In the case of some artists, the process of creating art from society’s waste is far more than a kind of personal expression. It represents the way they address the concerns about the destiny of the environment, politics, or consumerism, by transforming those things that most people consider trash into inspired objects of art. Using found objects to create art has an inherent quality, that of upcycling, since trash becomes a work of art.
Every day and everywhere, people dispose of mountains of non-biodegradable waste, such as plastic, which threatens our vital spaces. Since older times, people used to throw things they no longer needed onto the ground. These objects were practically absorbed into the earth. The concept of waste, as everybody knows it today, was not familiar to people living at that time. The modern attitude around this concept, as well as the general level of awareness regarding the types of trash and the amount the mankind produces, illustrates a desperate need for a totally new approach to this contemporary problem.
Upcycling, as a modern practice of conversion of waste materials into objects with new value, is quite a philosophy that brings a new vision about waste. It is not only a solution to the problems created by large amounts of garbage, but is also a revolutionary method of thinking that applies to how to work with an asset which is already abounding in human communities.
Upcycling art is a modern form of art which transforms apparently useless objects that people want to dispose of in objects with artistic value. A large number of galleries of recycled art demonstrate how trash can get an unexpected value and can satisfy the social need of art.
