People travelling around large countries, such as Australia, with limited facilities on their way prefer to have utility or UTE vehicles, as they are popularly known. The ute trays fitted in them makes them a utility vehicle but most of the owners change them and fit a custom made tray. Modifications to the vehicles for increasing its utility value and also to make it look different from others are very common among the UTE owners. These changes are usually made to increase the available space and also to boost its power and speed. Using custom steel tray is one of the popular additions. By adding trays to the vehicle, the length of the vehicle can be increased. However, there are legal limits to control its length and one cannot arbitrarily increase the size.

You can get UTE trays in different forms. There is light weight but expensive aluminum trays or you can go for more expensive but attractive steel trays and those who are conscious of expenses may opt for alloy trays that are comparatively much cheaper than other. There are companies that produce UTE tray of different sizes and ...
... sell them as ready made units. Some of the manufacturers of UTE vehicles supplies trays as standard unit. However, most of the owners are not satisfied with the standard package and prefer custom made trays for their UTE vehicles as they believe that it will increase the longevity of the vehicle.

Aluminum UTE tray is comparatively stronger and light weight as mentioned earlier. Since they are made from strong aluminum extrusions, they are durable and are also attractive. Another advantage of the aluminum tray is that there is no need for maintenance. Customized tray with drop down sides that are removable is preferred over the fixed factory fitted trays. The factory fitted trays have a capacity to carry only one ton of load whereas custom made trays have the capability to carry up to 2.2 tons. As aluminum trays are light weight. They will enable carrying extra load.

Apart from utility vehicle, the other major user of ute tray is pick- up vans. They suffer wear and tear in much larger quantum than any other vehicles due to the type of work that they are involved. The tray canopy of the vehicle serves as a protection to the pick up vans. The canopy and the UTE tray are very important part of the vehicle as they determine the space and the utility value of a particular vehicle.
