When talking about books, people are immediately tempted to think only about the bohemian writing process. The reality is that making a career in writing is more than just imagining incredible events and putting them in the right words. Today, becoming popular and well known among readers is a more complex process, involving several aspects, not just the quality of the piece of writing. Needless to says, talent must exist in order for a writer to gain success, but one should not undervalue the importance of presentation skills. A cover design is what attracts attention, is what will make your book shine on the library's shelf and make readers interested in your work. The same thing applies in all domains. Advertising is the key to a world renowned name.

Contrary to what many might think, knowing how to make your work noticed and striving to find just that element which best represents your book is nothing to be condemned for. Today, a cover designer is just as important as the writer himself. Actually, it can even be said that the process of becoming a recognised author is made up of two essential parts, the actual book, ...
... the manuscript to be more precise, and its cover. You often hear the phrase: don't judge a book by its cover. The reality is that this piece of advice is not about the writing domain. How do you assume that people choose a book they know nothing about ? A carefully set up blend between a dazzling cover design, meant to attract readers and a well written review posted on the back of the book, is the answer to your question. A cover designer is not by far a new concept in this business. Presentation is a well known preoccupation in this domain. Book have always needed a cover and not simply because they need protection. Even in past times, writers would think of ways to let the readers know that something fresh has appeared on the specialised market. Some would go around town and hand out short passages of the pieces of writing, others would ask for the help of artists to create a surprising image and add it to their book. Even then, ways of presenting a work were sought after.

Therefore, it can be said that the job of a cover designer has not changed in essence and purpose, but in the methods used to achieve a goal. A cover design will speak about the book itself. Its purpose is not to reveal the entire story, but to give the reader a glimpse of what he is bound to discover within those pages. Just like the writer itself, the designer has to think of a way to tell a story through images, intriguing the possible buyer. Moreover, keep in mind that it is the cover which will in the end emphasize your talent. How often have you purchased a book without looking at its cover? One should not regard this as being a superficial attitude, as readers do not have that many selection criteria. While there is the risk of purchasing a terrible book with an outstanding cover, there is also the situation in which talent goes unnoticed simply because it was mistakenly represented. In conclusion, the cover design is more important than one would have thought, having the power to lift talent and make it known.
