How To Hang Curtains
Adding curtains to a room is a great way to add that finishing touch or even hide flaws in windows or window frames. Curtains can add a touch of color in a room, insulate against the cold or heat, block sunlight, and can even make a room look taller.
Choosing curtains can be a difficult task, so make sure you take into account your personal taste as well as any functional qualities you want the curtains to have. Curtains come in a variety of colors, shapes, and even come in sheers for a softer look. Also take into consideration what you can afford as curtains can vary greatly in pricing.
Measure your windows to determine the length and width of the curtains and curtain rods needed. To make a window appear taller you can hang the curtains six to twelve inches above the window frame. You can also hang curtains wide of the window frames by four to six inches on either side so that when opened the entire window is visible, letting in maximum light. When measuring for the length of curtains, measure from where you plan to hang the rod to the ground. Length can also play an important part in the aesthetics of your ...
... curtains. For a stream-lined look, measure to the floor so the curtains just touch when installed. You can also add an inch or two to the length for a more casual feel, or for an old fashioned puddle look you can add four inches to the length. Also keep in mind how much fullness you want when the drapes are closed - a good measure is two times the window width which allows for relaxed, casual feel when the curtains are closed.
To hang the curtain rods you will need a ladder, level, pencil, drill, and the curtain rods and hardware. Measure where you want the rod holders to be and mark the holes with a pencil, making sure to use the level to guide you, there is nothing worse than a freshly hung set of curtains that are hung crooked. Once you have marked where you want the brackets to go simply drill a hole into the wall on each pencil mark. Place the curtains on the rod and place them on the brackets, gathering the curtains how you would like them. To add a finishing touch you can also use tie backs or valances to get the desired effect.
