Tablets are everywhere. They are in airports, on public transportation and anywhere else people want to be connected on the go. While they are enjoying great popularity right now, they aren't suitable for all uses. What is a tablet PC not suitable for?

Tablets are not useful for when you need to input a lot of text. For that reason, they are not as useful to schools or businesses as laptops. While the touchscreen input method is convenient, it is primarily suited for taking in information, rather than putting down information. When it comes to reading emails, surfing the Internet or watching videos, tablets excel in performance. However, the touchscreen interface is highly error prone and is not well suited for entering a lot of text or data. While proponents say that you can just add an external keyboard, that basically means you need to turn the tablet into a netbook to make it useful for such tasks. Additionally, with this configuration, the netbook would probably be cheaper and have even more capabilities.

Schools may not find them particularly ...
... useful for a number of reasons. In early years, when children are learning to read and write, they only meet half the equation. While they are good as electronic book readers, they don't help children to learn how to write. Pen and paper are still best for that. Add to this their somewhat fragile nature, and tablets in the hands of children sounds like an expensive recipe for disaster.

As children get older, they are often called upon to prepare reports and write papers. Again, while a tablet is good for doing research and surfing the Web, it may fall short when it comes time to produce information. Writing papers, doing calculations and doing anything that requires input can be challenging with a tablet.
In business, a tablet would function well where information retrieval is the primary concern. In a doctor's office, for example, doctors could quickly call up charts or other necessary facts but it may be difficult to enter notes. In a warehouse environment, they could be used for locating items, but entering corrections and doing inventory could get tricky.

So, what is a tablet PC suitable for? Bottom line, it is best used to consume content. But when it comes to actually creating content, they leave something to be desired. There are other tools that far surpass their capabilities.
