Wisdom Teeth Removal And Aftercare

In the back of your jaw sits a group of big teeth. They are called the third molars and are popularly known as wisdom teeth. They are the most troublesome among teeth because they have a habit of getting compressed. They might grow without any space between the other teeth at all or develop at a particular angle which can burden the next set of teeth. It results into bad teeth alignment and the patient might experience frequent toothaches because of this. Due to this issue, a lot of people resort to affordable wisdom tooth extraction to get rid of a problematic tooth or prevent forthcoming dental issues caused by it.
What Goes On During Wisdom Tooth Extraction
A completely ejected wisdom tooth can be handled easily by your dentist. But a wisdom tooth that is implanted in your jawbone or grew below your gums might require surgery and not just a simple tooth extraction. The dentist will take away a part of the bone that inclines upon the tooth and he or she will also create an incision unto the gums. It is a delicate procedure to undertake so as to reduce the quantity of bone to be taken out. Thus the wisdom tooth ...
... will be pulled out little by little rather than having it fully taken away.
Following a wisdom tooth extraction, the patient would have to get over the consequences resulting from the given drugs and anesthesia during the procedure. The patient would have to make sure that he or she regulates the swelling that might take place as well. Here are a few things to do right after a wisdom tooth removal and throughout healing.
1. The dentist will provide a gauze pad over the wound. Keep gnawing gently on the pad and replace the gauze pad with a fresh one after it becomes saturated with blood.
2. Be sure to take lots of rest and stay away from demanding activities because it can motivate bleeding from the wound. After the tooth extraction procedures, lie down at home and support your head with pillows. Keep your head elevated while lying down to keep the wound from bleeding.
3. To minimize swelling and soreness, use an ice pack during the first 24 hours after the tooth extraction. You can forgo the ice pack after 3 days of the surgery and instead use a warm washcloth or a heating pad.
4. Since you underwent tooth extraction or surgery, the dentist will advise you to take a liquid diet in order to fully recover from your wound. Keep away from ingesting liquids with “extreme” temperatures. Frozen liquids can result in pain while hot liquids can trigger bleeding.
5. If you are struck by hunger pangs, soft foods are your best bets. Do not force yourself to eat hard, crunchy and sticky foods. Eat mashed potatoes, Jello, soups or pudding.
6. If the numbness caused by anesthesia keeps up, refrain from gnawing on the cheek or lips.
7. To reduce pain and soreness after the second day of tooth extraction, make sure that you cleanse your mouth and the wound with a tepid, salt-based solution. Rinse your mouth gently a few times each day.
8. You might put off brushing until the wound is completely healed, but remember that in order to keep germs from plaguing your wound, you must clean your teeth and the tongue. Just brush very carefully and with care, avoiding the wound.
If however you are still bleeding or in total pain a good 24 hours after the extraction procedure, be sure to see your dentist ASAP.
