Setting up an environment for Java development requires all the basic tools & settings to write, ...

* Set up Java JDK and JAVA_HOME, this is a necessary step!

If you’re a beginner using Java for the first time, it is natural that you won’t have any related tools installed on your system. You have to install Java Development Tookit, which nothing but a bundled with the Java Runtime Environment. Make sure you download the latest version of the JDK. By this time, the current version of the JDK is JDK 7u17. So, download it and start following the instructions to install it.

You can change the default installation path by choosing the other path that is easy to remember. Once the installation is completed, you have to set the environment variables, which is very crucial for many Java tools as well as for Java to work perfectly.

You can set up variables by simply going to the Advance System Settings-> Advanced-> Environment Variables. Add variable name JAVA_HOME and the path of JDK installation. That’s it! You have installed JDK environment and Java runtime.

* Sep up Apache Ant and ANT_HOME

Apache Ant is well-known development tool used in many Java projects. However, if you are not going to set up home servers or complex projects, then it is not so important for you to install it. The installation process is quite easy, you just have to unzip the file to the specific folder and have to add variable ANT_HOME, the process of setting up variable is similar to the one we have seen above.

* Set up Apache Maven & MAVEN_HOME

Like Apache Ant, Apache Maven is also a popular tool that is widely popular among the developers. It serves many roles like building tool, a library dependency tool, a software project management tool and comprehension tool. Installing Apache Maven is similar to that of Apache Ant. You have to simply download the latest version, unzip the file, set up the variables and path and that’s it!

* Set up SVN support with the help of Tortoise

It is a very famous versioning system that is widely used by the Java developers. You can install many subversion clients on your system. Find the latest version, download the file and simply follow the instructions.
* Set up Git using Git extensions

Git is another version control system that is rapidly becoming popular among the developers. There are many instances where SVN is replaced by Git, so chances are very high that you may have to deal with it. It encourages users to interact with it using the command line. You can directly install the native Git client and all the other UI tools with the help of Git extensions, this is the reason why many developers use Git extension.

* Install Java IDE of your choice!

Now, it is time to install your favorite IDE for developing Java applications. You can use Netbeans, Eclipse or Idea InelliJ.
