Ajmer is located at a distance of 135 kilometres from Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli range and is located on the lower slopes of Taragarh hill. Taragaṛh Fort, the fort of Ajmer and the seat of the Chauhan rulers, is claimed to be the first hill fort of Asia and is located at the top of the Taragarh hill providing a breathtaking view of the city below. The walls are 3 kilometres in circumference, and the fort can only be approached by a steep and very roughly paved path.

Ajmer is a city in the Ajmer District of Rajasthan widely renowned as a sacred pilgrimage site for the Muslims and also as a gateway to Pushkar. This small city enjoys massive popularity with large number of pilgrims and also tourists visiting the region. The city also reflects the religious tolerance of the country as the city is not only significant for the Muslim but also the Hindu population, many Hindus are also found to visit the Ajmer Dargah of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.

Akbar built the Akbari mosque in the premises of the dargah and a fort which now houses a museum. Shah Jahan also contributed to the city’s architecture by building a white marbled Shah Jahani mosque.An architectural marvel, Adhai-din-ka-jonpura, was originally a Saraswathi temple built by the Chauhans, but converted into a mosque in the 12th century.The artificial lake, Ana Sagar lake, was constructed by Maharaja Anaji, the grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan.By the lake is a garden laid out by Jahangir, Daulat Bagh. Shah Jahan later added five pavilions, known as the Baradari, between the garden and the lake.

Located at the foot of a barren hill, the Dargah-e- Sharif is the place where the Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chisti's mortal remains lie buried. The Dargah has a beautiful marble dome and a courtyard, surrounded by a silver platform. It's believed that the tomb is a place of wish fulfillment for those who pray with devout and pure hearts. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek the blessings of the Khawaja.

The best time for Ajmer travel is during the festival of Uras when the care taker of the mosque is appointed during the festival and he remains in the office for one year. Ajmer attracts a large number of tourists annually and as such there are plenty of good hotels in Ajmer offering quality lodging facilities to all the travelers. The hotels in Ajmer are found across all budget groups thus, catering to the varying needs and preferences of the myriad of travelers visiting the city.

The best time to visit the city is during the months of September to March when the weather is pleasant and cool as against the scorching summer sun.
