Four Cs That Make A Diamond Priceless
Those who have ever purchased diamonds would know about 4Cs of diamonds that jewelers say. Diamonds are graded and priced globally based on 4Cs – Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.
Cut
Diamonds these days come in many shapes. We can see heart shaped diamonds, round, emerald cut, marquise, oval, pear, princess and radiant cut diamonds in jewelry. Each cut requires special expertise and reflects light in different ways.
Color
Diamonds come naturally in all colors though colorless or white colored diamond is the most popular one. The Gemological Institute of America or GIA has graded white diamond to different grades from D to Z where D is for colorless and Z is for light yellow. Colorless diamonds are the best. Between D to Z the color differences is very little and nearby grades are difficult to recognize by untrained eyes.
Clarity
There are 6 grades of diamonds on account of clarity. If there is not blemish or flaw at all the diamond is graded Flawless and considered the best. Flawless diamonds are very rare and hence valued high. Indians consider Flawless diamonds very auspicious. ...
... Internally Flawless (IF) diamonds with minor surface blemishes comes next. Next categories are Very Very Small Inclusions (VVS1 and VVS2), Very Small Inclusions (VS1 and VS2), Small Inclusions (SI1 & SI2) and the last grade is Imperfect Eye-Visible Inclusions (I1, I2, I3). The commonly used diamonds for jewelry belong to VS and VVS categories. Most of the small surface blemishes are invisible to common people. Only with trained eyes and special magnifying equipments the surface blemishes will be seen.
Carat
Carat or weight of the diamond is another aspect that determines the price of a diamond. A carat is divided into 100 points. As weight increases the rate also increases. Even if 2 diamonds have same weight differences in color, cut and clarity can result in different prices of diamonds.
Since common people do not have the expertise to determine the 4Cs of diamonds to make sure the diamond they buy is a genuine one, most countries have come up with common Certification of Diamonds which assures the customer of the quality and caring for your diamond they purchase.
Daily use of oils, creams etc can build up a layer on your diamond’s surface and dull the sparkle. Make sure you clean your jewelry with warm water and ammonia often which will wash away the oil and cream. You can also use a soft soap or shampoo solution and a soft brush while caring for your diamond.
