No two people work in exactly the same kind of workplace. However all workplaces have certain things in common – not least the fact they can be dangerous if they do not adhere to common Health and Safety laws.

An office may seem to be an innocent area to work, and it can indeed be safe. However a trailing lead from a computer, a stack of paperwork or a chair leg that is sticking out – all these things can provide a danger and a hazard for people to avoid. Just one thing can be all it takes to cause an injury or an accident.

So how can you stay safe when you go to work? A lot of this is simple common sense, and the most important thing to do is to ensure you can be pro-active in staying safe. Many things are the responsibility of your employer. However this does not mean you cannot take responsibility for your actions. If you see a hazard you should do something about it, even if this amounts to cordoning the area off and getting someone more experienced to deal with it.

Sometimes the best course of action is to have the right equipment in use. For example hazardous area computers with an atex monitor ...
... are required for certain working areas. Your workplace may not require hazardous area computers – you won’t need them in an office for example – but even if an atex monitor is not required you can still ensure your regular computer is properly installed. Keeping wires out of the way and ensuring they do not create a tripping hazard is part of the task you have to think about on a daily basis.

In many ways the best way to keep any workplace safe is to ensure every employee is able to do their bit to stay safe. It is all too easy to see something that could be a danger and to simply walk past it. But this is not the right attitude to take. While it may be the responsibility of others to handle such things when they occur, it is also the responsibility of every individual to ensure potentially dangerous situations are dealt with as soon as possible. Prevention is always better than cure, and this holds true with the workplace and its dangers as well.

Part of the task you have in keeping safe is to become familiar with your workplace as well. Every place has its own set of potential dangers and the more familiar you are with them the easier it will be to ensure you will stay as safe as possible. This holds true for everyone you work with, from your boss to the newest member of staff. If you hold this in mind every time you go to work, you will find everyone can keep their workplace in a safe and efficient manner. The last thing you want is to see an accident occur that could have been prevented.
