In fact, a survey that was taken recently has shown that half of workplaces in Britain do not have this device.

The survey was done by Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. There were 1,000 workplaces surveyed. Five hundred and thirteen reported that they did not have a defibrillator in their workplace. Nearly 66 percent of the workplaces that said no were large or medium-sized companies. February is heart health month. In order of heart health month, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health are encouraging people get a defibrillator for their workplace.

It is estimated that 30,000 people in the United Kingdom go into cardiac arrest when they are outside of the hospital. Less than 19 percent of these people survive. Additionally, 13 percent of workplace fatalities in America are caused by cardiac arrest.

Ms. White has stated that if a defibrillator is used a few minutes after a person goes into cardiac arrest, then his or her chances of survival are 75 percent. That further reiterates the importance of having a defibrillator in the workplace.

Three hundred and twenty-seven of the companies who took place in the survey were small businesses. One hundred and ninety-seven stated that they did not have a defibrillator in their workplace. The respondents were also asked about whether they felt it was important to get a defibrillator. Forty-five stated that they had not even thought about getting a defibrillator. Fifty-six stated that they believed that they did not need one. Thirty-four stated that they did not have enough employees to get one, and 31 stated that they did not want to get one because of the cost.

Ms. White is very worried about the companies that do not have defibrillators. If a person dies at work after going into cardiac arrest, then his or her friends, family and co-workers will be devastated. She also believes that companies need to consider the impact that losing a worker will have on the workplace. The good news is that early CPR and early defibrillation can help save lives. Ms. White believes that defibrillators will not only save lives, but it will also save businesses a lot of money. Therefore, they are a necessity for every business.
