Who’s Responsible For The Server With Colocation?
Colocation services are a unique type of web hosting for a very unique customer. With colocation, webmasters and website owners purchase a web server outright and hire a data center to store, and sometimes maintain, that server for them. This could be for many reasons, but is often due to the fact that webmasters cannot properly store the server in the way that’s needed. But with one person owning the server, and a third party overseeing it, who’s actually responsible for the server in case something happens to it?
That will depend on the data center you’re using and the arrangement you have with them. Sometimes business owners want full control over their website and their server and so, they only hire the data center to store the website for them. This will include making physical space in their server racks, and ensuring that they’re cooled correctly and stored properly. When it comes to the actual maintenance of the server however, the business owner can hire an IT firm to go to the data center and perform any upgrades or installations necessary.
In this case, the business owner will be responsible ...
... for the server in case anything should happen to it, unless the issue is the fault of the data center’s. For instance, if the server were to break down due to a hardware malfunction, it would be the responsibility of the business owner to repair it. However, if the server were to break down due to the conditions the data center provided, it would be the data center’s responsibility to repair the server and get it back into working condition.
There are many instances in which the business owner would like to own and have full control over their web server, but they don’t want to maintain it themselves or hire an IT firm to do it for them. In these cases, agreements can be drawn up between the data center and the business owner in which the data center manages and maintains the server, as well as stores it. This can be beneficial for the business owner because they won’t have to worry about performing any upgrades to the server, or maintaining it at all. However, this type of colocation service does cost more, so that may be a concern to business owners worried about their budget.
Colocation services can be just the answer for business owners who want to run a website, but don’t want the fate of their web server left to a traditional web host. Whether or not you choose to let the data center care for your server for you, or choose to hire IT staff who can get the job done is up to you. It will depend on what your business needs, what your budget is, and how much control you want to have over your web server.
