Bull bars are implements that are fitted to the front of vehicles in areas where they may come into contact with wildlife. A bull bar forms a barrier between the vehicle and wildlife to prevent damage to the vehicle. Usually, bull bars are made from metal, although it’s not uncommon to see plastic versions being used from time to time. In countries such as South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the chances of vehicles being met by wildlife are high, especially when drivers are making their way through sparse and remote rural areas. However, some people fit the bars to their vehicles not just for practical reasons but for stylistic purposes too. This means that there are scores of drivers attaching them to their vehicles when it is not necessary.
Use with care
Bull bars can pose a risk to the public and can cause harm to both pedestrians and other motorists. The authorities have been regularly known to coerce manufacturers into producing bull bars that won’t cause serious injuries to occur should a collision occur. Many people believe that the bars should not come installed ...
... into vehicles, and that the bars should be ordered separately as an addition to vehicles depending upon whether a driver feels that they have a real use for them or not. The bars are most commonly found on vehicles such as four wheel drives, vans and trucks. Bull bars play a pivotal role in rural driving, and without them, drivers can find themselves stranded in an extremely remote area after a collision has taken place. However, they would seem to be not so necessary in urban areas.
Rural advantages
The bars are however likely to cause injuries to pedestrians and damage to other vehicles that would perhaps be not so severe if they weren’t used. The drivers of vehicles equipped with bull bars can also be hurt more severely than they would otherwise be. Despite all this, it is hard to downplay the importance of bull bars in rural settings where they may be the difference between being stranded with no one around for miles or getting home safely.
