Cyrus Edwin Dallin (November 22,1861 – November 14, 1944) was an American sculptor well known for Native American subjects. When he was 19, he went to Boston to study sculpture with Truman Howe Bartlett. He also studied in Paris, with Henri Chapu and at the Academie Julian. Dallin converted from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) to Unitarianism. He was offered the commission to sculpt the angel Moroni for the spire of the LDS Salt Lake City Temple, and he turned this down. But later on he accepted the commission and after completing the statue said “My Angel Moroni brought me nearer to God than anything I ever did.” His exquisite statue became a revered symbol for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Angel Moroni statues for the spires of other LDS Temples were modeled on the lines of Cyrus Dallin’s Angel Moroni statue. While he was in Boston, he became a close friend of John Singer Sargent and worked with Augustus St. Gaudens.

In 1891 he married Vittoria Colonna Murray. Dallins returned to Utah to work on The Angel Moroni (1893). He was with the Drexel Institute in ...
... Philadelphia ,Pennsylvania teaching for a year. He also completed his sculpture of Sir Isaac Newton (1895) for the Library of Congress. Cyrus Dallin studied with Jean Dampt in Paris in 1897. Cyrus Dallin created more than 260 sculptures in his lifetime. Cyrus Dallin participated in a number of exhibitions. In the Salon of 1897, he entered a Don Quixote Statuette, and in the Salon of 1899 he entered the Medicine Man and the Exposition Universelle in the Salon of 1900. Cyrus Dallin and his wife relocated to Arlington, Massachusetts in 1900 and lived there for the rest of their lives and raised three sons. Cyrus Dallin was also very interested in archery .In the 1904 Summer Olympics in St Louis, Missouri, Dallin competed in archery, and won the bronze medal in the team competition. From 1899 to 1941, he was a member of the faculty of Massachusetts Normal Art School which is now called the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Devoted to Cyrus Dallin’s works is The Jefferson Cutter House in Arlington, Massachusetts. A local elementary school is named in his honor. Displayed at the Springville Museum of Art, in Springville, Utah are thirty of his sculptures. His papers are at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. The Dallin House at 253 S. 300 East in Springville, Utah and the Taylor-Dallin House in Arlington, Massachusetts are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to their association with Dallin. The sculpture, A Signal of Peace was exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and was installed in Chicago's Lincoln Park.

Appeal to the Great Spirit is Cyrus Dallin’s most famous work, and is an icon of American art. In 1929 Muncie, Indiana installed a one-third-size cast, and many Muncie residents consider it to be a symbol of their city. In 1985 one-third-size cast was installed in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Woodward Park. Smaller versions of this great work are in many American Museums and in the permanent collection of the White House.
