The process of industrialization near all the metro cities gave rise to an alternate housing option to the migrating population and hence the scenario gave birth to the concept of satellite towns in India. Hence we can say that a satellite town is an extension or an outstretched arm of the urban development center in India.

Theoretically, a satellite town/city has its own self-contained societies but they became one with the key metropolis because of suburban expansion outside metropolitan borders. However this definition doesn’t fully apply as a few satellite towns in India are totally planned and executed around the key metropolitan cities. Navi Mumbai is a classic example of fully planned and executed satellite town on the outskirts of Mumbai. In India, one of the most significant satellite towns is Navi Mumbai, which as an extension of Mumbai was perceived & coined to cater to the needs of migrating population who couldn’t afford the high ticket Mumbai property card. Similarly Thane on the outskirts of Mumbai provides relief to people who due to high ticket Mumbai property rates are not in the position to ...
... afford a home in Mumbai. These people opt for a property in Navi Mumbai, or a property in Thane as the same falls in their budget and provides all the required amenities for a holistic living.

Subsequently all the metros cities of India felt the pressure and hence the need of an alternate location emerged where amenities could be planned in a much better way and could themselves develop as magnets of development. After the success of Navi Mumbai several other satellite towns emerged along the metropolitan cities all across the country.

The national capital New Delhi was totally short of space as it came to the extension of industrialization in the capital. Henceforth, Faridabad – Haryana emerged as the first satellite town of New Delhi. Faridabad offered great scope for the emergence of industrialization clearly due to its close proximity with the national capital. Faridabad is known for its factories producing motorcycles, tractors, refrigerators, air conditioners, construction equipment machineries, switchgears, tyres, shoes and a lot more.

Gurgaon emerged as the second most significant satellite town in the national capital region that attracted a lot of new industries. Gurgaon is world known for the IT revolution that took state’s economy on the global upfront. After Navi Mumbai, Gurgaon became the second and the most affluent satellite town of India catering to the migrating population of national capital region and also became a center of development to attract people from New Delhi to shift base into Gurgaon. Properties in Gurgaon emerged to be more economical and large in comparison to that of New Delhi. Furthermore Gurgaon offered better space to the residents with best in class amenities such as gated two-tier security in properties in Gurgaon. The population density of Gurgaon is lower than that of Delhi. Apart from this, the Gurgaon residents get a better educated cosmopolitan neighborhood, ample job opportunities, world class schools & colleges and a huge number of recreational centers & shopping malls, thus a better quality and standards of life.
