Slim And Strong Load Cells For Lower Floor Scales

For a floor scale to take its performance to a higher level it has to get its platform to a lower level. The lower is the platform of a floor scale the easier it is to place objects whose weight we want to measure on to its platform. So what limits how low can the platform of a floor scale go? One key limit is the thickness of the load cell. This has to go under the platform of the scale because it is on the load cells that the weight of the object has to be exerted. The load cells are able to inform how much load is being experienced by each of the cells.

The load cells can of course be very slim but given the fact that a floor scale is usually used to measure the weight of very heavy objects a very slim load cell will not be able to withstand such a load. Alternately if a material is used for the load cell that is slim and can withstand high loads it may not have strain characteristics that make it suitable for use in the load cell. For use in a load cell a material should not get fatigued with constant bending and unbending and it should give the same strain reading for the same force even after many number of weighing ...

This is therefore an area of research as science tries to come up with materials that are very strong and produce a predictable strain. And as soon as an improvement is achieved you can expect floor scales which use cutting edge technology to get a little lower.

Of course you as a buyer also need to make a trade off between how low a floor scale you buy and the benefit you get from an extra low floor scale. This is because the latest floor scales which have a very low profile will tend to cost more.
