All too often, jobs involving tools can end in injury and, the majority of the time, it is more to do with a lack of care being taken than any other reason. It is this inescapable truth that makes accidents so frustrating. With a little common sense though, a lot of pain and timewasting can be avoided.

Be realistic

Quite often, people take on a job they are simply not qualified to do; believing, or more likely hoping, their ability is better than it is. It is far better to ask for help or seek a professional for the job than spend hours in A&E.

Be clean and tidy

Another common issue is poorly maintained hand tools, which are easy to neglect. Keeping these clean and in good order is essential to safe working, whilst it will also improve and speed up the tasks in hand.

As well as regular cleaning, checking the condition before each use and replacing when necessary, is also important. Where practical, products and tools should be stored in their original containers and always stored appropriately.

Stay sharp

They should also be placed out of harms way, with many accidents occurring ...
... through falling tools. This is particularly the case with cutting tools such as hand saws, which can obviously do serious damage if not looked after.

One area of maintenance that should always be taken seriously is to maintain a good cutting edge. Blunt cutting tools, much like kitchen knives, can be lethal. Slipping more easily, more prone to getting stuck, and requiring more pressure and effort than is safe, the list of potential problems is endless.

As much as looking after tools is important, so too is wearing the right clothing and protective gear. Planning a job well, and having everything that is needed close to hand will make things safer too but, in essence, it is all about common sense.
