The Town Of Santillana Del Mar

All things considered, Santillana Del Mar is among the very beautiful towns in all of Spain. There are stone houses located in the town that date between the 15th and 17th centuries. The preservations are quite intense and all the buildings are intact.

The place is sometimes referred to as a town of three lies as it is not santa (a holy area), it is not llana (flat area) or Del mar (at the sea directly). The municipality overlooks the area of the sea but the location of this town is inland. This makes the region even more interesting.

The beginning of the city was initiated by a monastery called La Colegiata. The monastery was of a roman origin. It dates back to the 12th century. Pilgrims loved to tour this area, thus making it gain all the popularity that it has to date. The monastery is a great place to appreciate art works like the doors as well as the altarpiece that dates back to the 17th century.

The plaza mayor is a very unique place where you will actually be in another century. The buildings here are made mainly of some very beautiful stones. You will really appreciate time here.

... are two streets that can be considered as main in the town. There are many houses of the nobility that are local. There are iron as well as wood balconies here and some have coats of arms. There are many shops where one can purchase keepsakes as well as other products that may hold your interest. Many of the things that are sold here are from the Cantabria region. You can buy some of the local delicacies like sobaos as well as cheese.

A museum called Diocesan is at a place that used to be a convent. The convent was called Regina Coeli. The art works found in here are mainly religious works.

A museum called Inquisition has a collection of torture tools. The collection is quite private. The collection is from many parts of Europe and covers centuries from the 14th to the 19th.

There is a botanical garden here and a zoo area where you will be able to see flora and fauna species. They all live in harmony here and it will indeed be a great time enjoyed while here. This is a perfect place for the whole family and if there are children, they will be thrilled to be here.
