Collecting is such an enjoyable and challenging hobby. The different personalities of collectors show off in their collection. Some people collect toys, celebrity memorabilia, shoes and yes, stamps. Types of Stamps
There are all sorts of stamps that one can collect. There are people who are into collecting rare ones while others can prefer to save those that are designed with a certain theme. For example, there are hobbyists who will save stamps that are patriotic or there are those that collect Disney themed stamps. There are different types of stamps, here’s a quick rundown of them:
Definitive stamps- this is the most popular type that can be seen in most stamps collection. These are normal stamps for postal use that you can see stamped on snail mails every day.
Commemorative stamps- ...
... these are special stamps that are often related to a special event, achievement or in honor of a hero or icon. In the USA, a Mother Theresa stamp was circulated with the value of $0.44.
Special stamps- these are made in large sizes and are sold for a limited time. The Olympics theme is one example of this type of stamp.
Military Stamps- these are used by military organization during times of war. The letters with these stamps are often transported by the army themselves.
Official stamps- these are special stamps that are mainly used for government purposes or official use. These are not used by public and are often sold at a high price by stamp dealers.
Tools of Trade
Stamps can be sensitive, especially if there are old and rare. It is very important to handle them with care to protect their value. You would need stamp tongs to handle these pieces and to make sure that you don’t put thumb prints on them or damage them. You also need stock books where you keep your stamps. They can either come as bound or loose leaf. It is made of cardboard with a strip of clear plastic where you place your precious stamps. You might also need a magnifying glass to appreciate the smallest detail in your collection.
Where to Buy
You can find dealers in your local area where you can buy regular stamps, rare and special stamps, which can either be used or new. You can also buy stamp packets, which holds about 50 stamps per packet. There are antique shops or collectible sellers that may have stamps for sale too. You can also find a number of sellers online or chance on some rare ones in auction sites.
