Voltage optimization is the reduction of the voltage that is systematically controlled. The voltage is received by a device which is an energy consumer and the controlled reduction of these voltages reduces the use of energy, reactive power demand and the power demand. The devices available for voltage optimization can either have a fixed voltage adjustment or can electronically regulate the voltage. The voltage optimization devices are generally installed in series for the mains of the electrical supply to a building to ensures that all electrical equipments are benefitted and provide an optimized supply.

There are many uses of using Voltage optimisation devices. Firstly, as mentioned earlier, it enables to provide a controlled and less voltage for the site’s equipment which helps in improving the power quality. This is realized by balancing phase voltages, transient of supply and the filtering harmonics.

It is installed in between the main low voltage distribution board and the raw mains transformer. However, the facility manager and the company providing voltage optimiser solutions should conduct a full study to completely understand the right kind of device that can properly be advantageous to the owner by voltage reduction. This will facilitate the owner to buy the voltage optimiser of the right size and not all the systems available for the supply.

Voltage optimiser, if not chosen properly will not benefit the owner. Its units consist of a transformer and this does not offer selectively and dropping voltage with regards to all the supplies. This may not offer any commercial benefit. Some voltage optimiser have also been installed on many high frequency lighting circuits which many a times do not offer any commercial benefit.
