Nfl Discussing Widening The Football Field By 35 Feet By L. Iwamoto
The current topic of discussion at the NFL is whether they should make a super radical change-- by widening the playing field from 160 feet to 195 feet. That’s another 35 feet! That’s huge!
The explanation for their madness? Player safety. The fields in the Canadian Football League are 195 wide, and they have fewer injuries than we do, supposedly because their fields are wider and give the players more room. Today’s players are bigger and faster than they were decades ago, so there is a lot of crunching and smashing of skulls, i.e. concussions. Bill Polian, a former competition committee member told the National Football Post, “it’s a radical idea, but it’s worth thinking about. You would have more space and perhaps a safer game.”
Everybody has a different opinion.
Andrew Fisher of Rant Sports says, “The theory behind widening the field is that it would reduce violent collisions by giving players more room. I’m of the belief that the NFL could really care less about player safety, but now that they’re facing years and years of lawsuits because of concussions, they’ve ...
... been forced to change their attitude.” He continues, “People like violence, and they more the NFL reduce s the violence in their games the more people will tune out. Personally, I could care less about the health dangers of playing football on the players. It’s 2013, the players know what they’re signing p for. If they don’t want to risk their future, don’t step on the field…this is just another example f the continued pussification of the NFL.”
Another opinion is that the NFL would be changed forever. Victor Contreras of the Sacramemto Bee wrote, ”Can you imagine Adrian Peterson sweeping around the left end with two defenders to beat and an acre of field to do so? What would Joe Flacco have done against the 49ers? Chris Culliver can’t cover Jacoby Jones on a regular-width field.” Contreras’ point is that records would be breaking at the speed of light. How could any records pre-195 feet field and post 195 foot field possibly be compared?
Know what I think? Keep the fields at 165 feet. All it would take is for the NFL players t get off steroids and be the normal size the players were decades ago. Not only to it save the expense and craziness of changing all the existing stadiums; not only would it reduce the costs of pay offs for concussions; but we’d be watching authentically huge guy ramming against each—yeah, we would be watching the real deal instead of Team-Steroid football.
