Not everyone knows there are in fact many types of yoga. For those coming to a class to better their health or just enjoy a few moments of silence and meditation, here's a list of what other classes you might want to try and what distinguishes each from the rest.

Ashtanga or sometimes known as Ashtanga Vinyasa or Power Yoga involves performing a series of postures coupled with synchronized breathing. Since it is done in a hot room, it produces intense internal heat and the sweating caused detoxifies muscles and organs. It improves blood circulation, stamina, flexibility. It is physically demanding thus is not recommended for those just starting out.

Bikram yoga, like Ashtanga is done in a hot room though in this kind, the heat is turned up from 95 to 100 degrees. The sequence of postures performed is usually done twice per session. The extreme heat similarly promotes flexibility, detoxification and prevention of injuries.

Hatha is another form which is considered to be the most popular, and is the foundation of all other yoga styles. It incorporates patterned breathing, posture and meditation into one complete ...
... system to achieve enlightenment. The hatha poses called "asanas", together with the breathing techniques ("pranayama") are done in a calm and meditative way. These emphasize purifying and strengthening the mind and body.

Iyengar yoga meanwhile achieves the common results of other known types but executes the poses in a precise body alignment. The poses are held longer and rest for a few breaths before stretching into another pose. It also uses equipment like wooden blocks, cushions, chairs, blankets and straps. This is done to help the less flexible ones practicing yoga.

Restorative yoga on the other hand is far different from all the other types as it eliminates the active postures and focuses instead on the relaxation part. It is very good for people recovering from injuries or illnesses, or anyone who wants relief from stress.

Kripalu is called the yoga of consciousness since the poses are done to release emotional and spiritual blocks. Precise movement is not as strictly imposed. The postures are done in a more spontaneous and softer way.

There are actually many other known methods of doing yoga. These are just some of the most popular and most practiced ones. Whether you just need some time to relax or seeking mental and physical and yes, even spiritual detoxification, you could try for yourself if any of these yoga types could do your body any wonders modern science may not.
