A deadline is looming over your head. The assignment given by your marketing agency is due today, but instead of working on it, you are doing silly miscellaneous things. You know you should be getting your work done, but you are not in the mood to do anything, much less to come up with any creative designs. Statistics show that over 20% of the population is affected by procrastination and that it is on the rise.

We all know how procrastination works. When we procrastinate, we put off important tasks until it’s too late. And when the deadline has passed, we panic and wish we had started earlier. The chronic procrastinators are stuck in this vicious cycle. They are constantly putting things off, delaying it, or hiding from it. Procrastination is a bad habit which prevents us from achieving greater things in life.

Don’t let procrastination take over your life

Here are some helpful steps to overcome procrastination.

Divide your work into small parts. One of the reasons why so many people procrastinate is because they find the work too overwhelming. Break it down into little steps, and then focus ...
... on one step at the time. If you still find it hard to get things done, then break it down even further. This will help you make the task look less challenging.

Change the scenery. Environment has a huge impact on our productivity. Take a look at your work space. Is it cluttered, or is it so comfy that you just want to take a little nap? Is your environment inviting you to be productive?

Create a detailed timeline. Having just one deadline for your work creates the impression that you have plenty of time and you keep moving everything back, until it’s past the deadline. Creating a timeline for each specific deadline is important. This way, you know that each task needs to be finished by a certain date.

Take action and just do it. You can do all the planning and strategizing, but if you don’t take action, nothing will happen. Whatever it is you are procrastinating on, if you want to get it done, you need to get a grip on yourself and just do it.

According to some researchers, procrastination has more than quadrupled in the last 30 years. Have some willpower and stop yourself before becoming a chronic procrastinator.
