With growing concern about global warming and rising energy prices affecting the real estate industry, high-performance buildings and sustainable development are becoming increasingly important to homeowners and developers around the globe. To achieve this, building services must be optimized both in terms of performance and on how they respond to the building, in order to ensure the most efficient solution. A holistic approach to design and development is required in order to achieve a reduction in the environmental footprint of a development.

Today, more and more residential buildings are gradually adapting the concept of sustainability. They do not just use materials that are easy on the budget and nice to look at, but they also make sure that they are environmental friendly.

Among the different factors of promoting sustainable development in homes and offices, sustainable painting is one of the most important. Sustainable painting and green living are popular phrases among consumers. Home and building owners would like to be environmentally responsible without sacrificing modern luxury in their homes. ...
... The key is to understand the viability of the materials available in terms of sustainability.

For painting experts, they know that when it comes to sustainability they need to use painting products that offer long term durability and lifespan while consuming the least resources after the application is complete. In other words, the need to change the colors of your walls or your home in totality adds to the need to use more products and consume more resources.

Today, more and more paint manufacturers are trying to produce paint products that are more environmentally friendly. Thanks to the modern civilization, they now realize the importance of preserving our environment.

At home, you can also promote sustainable painting in your own terms by doing the following:

1. Reducing materials used

Since painting can sometimes be a tough job especially if you are not prepared or if you do not know how to start your project, it is best to come up with a good plan first before you embark on the task. As you plan, you can roughly estimate the necessary materials for your painting project. Try to buy materials that are only needed in a specific area.

For example, you can start with one room first. Calculate the amount of paint needed to cover the whole area. If you want to finish the job as fast as you can, you may opt for spray painting. Spray nozzles regulate the flow of liquid from the can, which would eventually help you cover the walls in no time.

The idea is to reduce the amount of materials you will use in each painting job. The less materials you consume, the lower cost it would be for manufacturers to produce paint products and, thus, the lower resources used.

The problem with most consumers is that to save on money, they buy large containers of paint. These are actually larger than what they really need. In the end, they just leave these extra paint products in their garage or basement area thinking to use it in the future. In reality, it will just sit there for more than 10 years or so and will only be rediscovered once they have decided to clean the area. Sad to say, it can never be used by that time and so the only thing to do is to throw it out. What happens to the money they have saved from discounts? It gets thrown out as well, including the resources used to manufacture that paint.

2. Recycle or reuse

Recycling will not only save you money but will also help save the environment. The lesser demand for these products, manufacturers will produce less. So if you still have a good paint brush, try reusing them.

Keep these things in mind and you will be on your way to sustainable development for your home. You don't have to be an environmentalist or an expert on sustainability to achieve this.
