You have decided that you want to pick a wooden centre table because your room is in desperate need for some warm wood accents. But do you know what shape will be ideal for your living room arrangement? Believe it or not, just knowing what material you want in your center table is not enough; you also have to carefully consider the shape because the scale and proportion of the table will have a deep impact on the visual effect it has in any room setting.
The right shape will depend largely on the space available and the furniture setting. In a large living room where you have an L-section couch, a rectangular center table will be perfect. It covers more area, can be used from all 4 sides and will look visually more balanced with such an elongated seating style. However, if the seating arrangement is close spaced and also the seats are slightly rounded, you can opt for either a round center table or an oval shape too. What happens if you pair a long sofa with a round table? Not only does it look odd visually, you will find that your guests constantly keep standing up to be able to pick snacks laid out on the table or to ...
... put their glass down. In case you already have a round center table and want to get rid of this problem, the solution is to add smaller peg tables to the either ends of the sofa, so guests seated there have a surface to put down their glasses.
The shape of your center table furniture not only has a visual effect, it also affects the practicality if the furniture arrangement as a whole. If your living room is long and narrow, which forced you in to buying long narrow couches, you also need to buy a long and narrow center table. Even a low console table will suffice in such a space, and should the area be too linear and long for a single table to cover it from end to end, break down the arrangement in to two smaller rectangular wooden center tables in the same design so that the area looks a bit more open.
A round center table is perfect for a small space and sometimes, can be a better choice than a square table. Square tables can look more balanced, considering that most furniture arrangements have straight lines and this is accentuated by a small square table. However, sharp edges can make this style very risky in a home with toddlers, which is where a round center table will come to rescue. If you don’t have kids, by all means choose a square sheesham wood table – it has class, it has character and it definitely has more style.
The length of the table should always be long enough for everyone seated on the sofa to be able to reach the table without getting up from their seat. If a rectangular center table is created a visual block and making your room look smaller, you can opt for an oval shape with a clear glass top. It is elongated without having clear edges to create visual hindrance and the clear glass surface allows for visual continuity between the open spaces to be maintained.
