Konark Famous For Its Sun Temple

Konark is a small town situated in the Puri district of Odisha, India. Konark is situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal, 65 km from Bhubaneswar the capital of Odisha. Konark is the place of the 13th-century Sun Temple. The name Konark has come from the word Kona (which means corner) and the word Akra (which means sun).

This is the second most popular festival of Odisha (Rath Yatra of Puri being the most popular) which is celebrated woth much fervour and joy. A large number of pilgrims from all over country take a holy dip in the Chandrabhaga river and offer prayers to the Rising Sun.

An architectural wonder dedicated to Surya Devata (Sun God) the Sun Temple is one of the most popular tourist places in Konark. The Sun temple is designed like a Chariot with 24 wheels with excellent carving each having a diameter of 10 meters, being pulled by seven horses and carrying Sun God. The Sun Temple also known as the Black Pagoda was built by King Narashima Deva in the year 1278 and has an idol of Jagmohana which is a display of the remarkable architecture of ancient times.
