Apple exercised total control over the mobile application approval process for the iOS platform even a while ago, until the iPhone was jailbroken. Hacking or jailbreaking has led to several benefits such as running unapproved app codes and installing mobile apps without facing restrictions. It is well known that rules for getting an application approved by Apple authorities are stringent and if the software is not built as per instructions of the Apple editor, they will not make it to the App Store despite their innovative and useful features. Therefore, the phenomenon of jailbreaking not only has legal but also moral implications. This is the reason why mobile market researchers often advise refraining from jailbreaking an iPhone device despite its growing popularity among both loyal and potential iOS app users. Listed below are some reasons why iPhone jailbreaking is a malpractice:

1. Jailbroken iPhones reportedly have stability issues – The mobile app developers who engage in the practice of jailbreaking do not follow the guidelines set by Apple for CPU and memory usage. This leads to the creation of software which ...
... affects the battery life of the device, they lead to slower operation of iPhones and the need to reboot the device becomes frequent. Though the contemporary mobile market sells performance management applications for better operation of jailbroken iPhones, they often fail to restore good quality functionality.

2. Jailbroken iPhones do not come with a warranty – Apple does not support iPhones which are jailbroken. This means that the warranty period becomes null and void if your iPhone is jailbroken. This becomes a major problem for the user especially if the Apple device faces hardware related problems in the future. For getting the necessary servicing done, the user must first get the iPhone back to its original pre-jailbroken state; but a reverse jailbreak sometimes may not be able to restore original hardware and software quality.

3. Jailbreaking leads to bricking – Bricking is a term used to describe the state when reloading or rebooting of software in a jailbroken iPhone will not be able to restore its original behavior and functions. This means that the iPhone will become completely unusable.

4. Jailbroken iPhones get ‘locked out’ of App Store – There have been incidents in the past when Apple prevented all jailbroken iPhone users from using the features of the iBook store. Though developers have successfully circumvented this, recent reports suggest that Apple will put a ban on jailbroken devices and take major action against the developers who indulge in the practice of jailbreaking; though there is a section of software developers who believe that Apple will never actively condemn the practice of jailbreaking, just like the company has not done till today. However, even if Apple does not ‘lock out’ jailbroken iPhones, there are several organizations worldwide which do not allow the use of jailbroken iOS devices at the workplace.

5. Jailbreaking opens up the iPhone to malware – The certified security team of Apple does not review codes of non App Store software. This means that developers of jailbroken iPhones themselves check for security issues in the app codes. This enhances the risk of developers creating viruses, spyware, and other forms of malware within a software and sell it as a legitimate iPhone application.

The potential of risk involved in using jailbroken iPhones is distinctively higher when compared to non jailbroken Apple devices. This is the reason why developers should refrain from jailbreaking.
