When To Go For Weight-loss Surgery
If obesity is a chronic condition for you, it may be time to consider weight-loss surgery (bariatric surgery). The surgical procedure facilitates weight-loss as it restricts food intake by interrupting digestive processes. It is the best option for severely obese people who have been unable to lose weight by other non-surgical procedures.
For patients suffering from an obesity-related disease, weight-loss surgery is a boon. It is sometimes also the only recourse for the severely obese. If a person has a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, he/she is considered to be severely obese. Some people, who may be having a BMI of 35 to 40, may be suffering from obesity-related issues like sleep apnea, diabetes or heart ailment. These persons too become candidates for bariatric surgery.
It is imperative that you first sincerely attempt to lose weight via proper eating habits, good physical activity and lifestyle changes. Follow all conventional methods like support groups, exercise, calorie-counted meal plans, food journals and one-on-one counseling. But sometimes, the threat of death from obesity related complications ...
... is much more for a patient, than the problems associated with undergoing a surgical procedure. Just like other treatments for obesity, surgery provides different results for different patients.
You can undergo two types of surgical procedures. One is restrictive surgery in which the stomach is made smaller. A part of the stomach is removed or closed. This limits the quantity of food the stomach can hold. You feel fuller after eating lesser amount of food. Another is the malabsorptive surgery after which most of your digestion takes place in the small intestine. In this the length of the small intestine is shortened, limiting the quantity of food that is completely digested.
Prior to the procedure you may be required to prove that your attempts at weight-loss from non-surgical methods have failed. You may be evalued psychologically to determine your likely response to the subsequent loss in weight and new body image. Following the nutritional counseling is of utmost importance before and after the weight-loss surgery. Surgeons look for a motivated patient who has a clear understanding of the factors related to post-surgery care. After a weight-loss procedure, you will need to follow extensive medical guidelines including diet and exercise. Of course all precautionary tests prior to the surgery are carried out like assessing the condition of your hormonal systems and heart.
My advice to you is based on my own personal experience of having suffered from obesity for years on end, until I took my doctor’s advice and chose to go for the surgical procedure LAP-BAND Florida. Do not delay in taking the right decision at the right time. Sometimes procrastination can become your greatest enemy. But remember, you must give yourself the chance to lose weight by other non-surgical procedures first. Keep in mind that surgery is a serious undertaking and you must mentally prepare yourself for life-long post-surgery care and precautions.
