Agartala is the capital city of Tripura and the languages generally spoken are Bengali and Kokborok. The state has a magnificent history of over 2000 years and was ruled by over 186 kings.


Where is Tripura

Tripura is a northeastern state in India and covers an entire area of 10,490 sq. km. Initially, the state was an independent body called the Tripuri Kingdom, which was later merged with the Republic of India on 15 October 1949. The state is situated on the India-Bangladesh border.


About Tripura

The Hindu epic Mahabharata and Emperor Ashoka's pillar inscriptions also bear instances about the state. The erstwhile Tripura was called "Kirat Desh" in mythological times and is embedded throughout the state's history. The Manikyas ruled over Kerala for nearly 3000 years in the state.


The state is home to a large number of linguistic groups and hence enjoys a composite culture. Dominant cultures in the state are Tripuri, Koloi, Noatia, ...

Exploring the State

Tripura has a major mythological and historical relevance in the history of India. The major tourist destinations in the state are Dharamnagar, Kailashnagar, Kashba, Amarpur and Damboor.


The state also houses the Ujjanta Palace, which is located in Agartala, and the Neermahal Palace in Melagarh, which is located about 50 km from the city of Agartala; Jhumpa Hills are located in the North Tripura, Unakot is located in Kalisahar, and Pilak is located in the south Tripura. Some of the other attractions in Agartala are the Rose Valley Park and the Akhaura border located in the city.


Religion and Culture

Hindus constitute a vast majority of the population in the entire state, most of who are the native Tripuri people and the Bengalis. Lord Shiva and Goddess Tripureshwari are largely worshipped by Hindus in Tripura. Festivals celebrated by the Hindus in the state are Navratri, Kali Puja, and Durga Puja.


The second largest community in the state is Muslims. They are mostly Bengalis and belong to the Sunni sect. The Christian population in Tripura generally consists mostly of the tribal people in the state and some native Tripuri people. Baptists in the state form a majority among the Christians in the state closely followed by the Roman Catholics.
The state is home to a major number linguistics groups, and thus, it has a very composite culture. Dominant cultures in the state are Tripuri, Bengali, Murasing, Munda, Koloi, Halam, Kuki, Garo, Mizo, Chakma, Uchoi, Mogh, Noatia, Jamatia, Oraon and Santhal.
Handicrafts, dance, music and fine arts form a majority of the state. Chongoreng, Sarinda and Sumui are the unique instruments used in the state. Hojagiri and Bizhu are the popular dance forms practiced in the state.


Things to Know

Alcohol is strictly prohibited in Tripura. However, pirated alcohol is widely available in the state and is injurious to health.
