In recorded history, the manufacturing of sandpaper dates back to early 13th century, China. Like sandpaper, sanding sponges are tools for smoothing a surface’s texture or grit. A sand sponge consists of a foam block, wrapped in sandpaper on all sides. These abrasives are square in shape making them easy to hold and have a nice grip.

Sand sponges come in different grits ranging from extremely rough to a fine grit. Similar to sandpaper, with a sand sponge you can remove the roughness of a material or object you are sanding. A medium grit removes the groves left by a rough grit sponge and finally, you can use a fine grit to smoothen out any unevenness on the surface. You will know that you have sanded it enough, when you feel a smooth even texture upon touching the surface with your hand.

There is grit available in sand sponges for every job, whether you are using it for a project around the house or in a factory or in an office. You can do fine sanding to remove paint or carve wooden surfaces. It is also great for working around narrow spaces and contoured surfaces. Sanding sponges are pliable making them ideal ...

Sand sponges are among the best products available from the wide variety of abrasive sponges. Sanding sponges are very resilient and you can reuse them after washing. They are very durable and you are able to get more use out of a single sponge compared to a sheet of sandpaper.

To purchase the appropriate product, you need to know the type of sanding block you will need for the particular project. Read the grit level on the packaging material and take a look at the results produced by the grit. Remember, for a finer finish, look for a higher number. For use on plastic, metal and even wood surfaces, go for wet/dry sponges. Different surfaces need different sanding blocks and different grits.

Typically, you will begin with a heavy to medium grit sanding sponge and end with a fine or light grit one, during the sanding process. For a fine to medium finish, rub the sand sponge lightly over a surface. To even out uneven texture, scrub the finish vigorously. You can wet the sponge with water to reduce debris. Paint does not stick on a dust coated surface, so take care to clean the object by wiping it after sanding. There are several safety measures to be taken prior to sanding. The safety equipment includes eye protection gear, a safety mask to avoid inhaling small airborne particles and gloves.
