Online teaching – Why You Should Do It
“A teacher who loves learning earns the right and the ability to help others learn.”
― Ruth Beechick, Easy Start in Arithmetic/K-3:
During our formative years, we were often asked by our parents, teachers and other elders – what will you be when you grow up? In all probability, the answers would be doctor, engineer, businessman, lawyer or even a hero/heroine. Very rarely did we hear someone say ‘teacher’.

Though we all agree that teaching is a noble profession, not many of us wish to pursue it. That’s because of the belief that teaching lacks the glamour and the big bucks other professions have. Surprisingly, with the advent of technology, teaching has taken a completely new meaning and dimension. Online teaching and online learning are the two sides of the coin called ‘Online education’.
Online Teaching – Who is it Meant for
I’m a full-time employee, where do I have the time? I’m a student, how can ‘I’ be a teacher? I’m scared of public speaking, it’s impossible for me to teach.
These ...
... are some of the reasons for not being able to teach. And quite honestly, these are valid reasons. But the magic wand that can make all these problems disappear and make teaching ‘possible’ for you is ‘online teaching’.
Probably, the question that keeps popping up in your head is – ‘But why should I teach?’ There are plenty of reasons why you should take up online teaching.
Why Online Teaching
The ability to explain something to others in a lucid way can work in your favor, especially at work place. By teaching online, you send a strong message to your superiors and mas person is capable of giving clear instructions to the team when necessary.
You have the freedom to use your creativity in explaining a concept in your own way, thus creating your own trend and style. Then there is the gratification one gets through teaching others. Given all this, it’s not surprising there is a steady increase in the number of people teaching online courses. You teach, you learn and you earn.
Some other benefits of online teaching jobs
• Greater online teaching opportunities, thanks to the ever increasing online courses.
• Once you’ve built the course/syllabus, you can reuse or mold the materials for other classes.
• You can save time and money spent on commuting.
• You can schedule your course and plan your day.
• As an e-tutor,you can work wherever you want and be comfortable (unless you are video chatting with students)
Now that you’ve analyzed the opportunity, the benefits and the scope, maybe you should give online tutoring some serious thought. What say? OK, made up your mind to teach online? Fantastic! Here is a checklist to help you get started
• Do you own a reliable computer and high-speed Internet connection?
• Are you willing to learn new technology that might be necessary to teach online?
• Are you a regular internet user and check your e-mails regularly?
• Do you wish to add experience and diversity to your resume?
• Are you self-disciplined and stick to your schedules?
• Do you use multi-media to make your lectures more interesting?
• Do you believe in sharing knowledge?
If the answer to all these questions is yes, you are just the right one to take up online teaching opportunities! It is not to say that online teaching jobs are without any vices. But the very principle of ‘sharing/imparting knowledge’ is perhaps good enough to overlook some of those drawbacks of e-teaching.
Like Ruth Beechick says, if you love to learn, you have the right to teach others. So go ahead, teach the world. Good luck!
