Now-a-days, two major gastric bypass surgeries are performed, although there are more than two methods. But the most common types are roux-en-y method and extensive gastric bypass surgery. There are some marked differences between these two surgical approaches. In case of roux-en-y method first a part minute pouch of stomach is created by stapling parts of stomach together. After that small intestine's y shaped section is attached to the above pouch. This helps the food to bypass duodenum and first part of jejunum. Due to this arrangement there will be a reduced calorie as well as nutrient absorption. Now-a-days this surgery is done through a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin telescopic instrument which is used to view inside the abdomen and through which incisions are made.

The next method called extensive bypass surgery is more complex as the name suggests. In this method, the entire lower stomach region is removed. The upper pouch of stomach is directly connected to the last part of small intestine. This method also helps in reducing weight loss but it is less popular method of treatment. Because of this surgery the stomach size is reduced to almost 90%.This allows only necessary food intake or reduced food intake.

According to the surveys conducted, the mortality rate due to this surgery is very low. Although in certain cases complications were found but these were minor.
