A beautiful smile and a gleaming set of teeth add to the aura of a person’s appearance and personality. Dentures came into existence for more than one reason. They not only replace the functionality of original teeth, but also help one regain confidence. Several dentists today fit dentures in an efficient manner. However even if dentures are constructed and fitted properly in the mouth, they tend to become loose over time. This is especially true if the person does not keep visiting his or her dentist often for readjustments and relining.

When dentures become loose, they can fall out of place while speaking and can be pretty embarrassing. The solution is to opt for implant dentures, wherein the dentures are fixed to the jawbone using implants. With these types of dentures, a person can eat, socialize and speak without worrying about the dentures slipping out of place. This can help boost a person’s confidence and also improve self-image. Furthermore, as there are no more unsightly gaps in the mouth, the person’s overall appearance improves for the better. He or she can flash a smile without concern or worry!

Usually implant placement for the support of a customized denture is preferred for the front portion of the upper or lower jaw, where there are no major nerves or blood vessels that can pose an obstacle when drilling holes and inserting the implants. Furthermore, this portion of the jawbone tends to be more resistant to atrophy and shrinkage, even if patients have been living without natural teeth for many years.

The Benefits of Opting for Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are carefully fabricated to look aesthetically pleasing. Chicago implant dentists take measures to ensure that the color of the porcelain crowns is as close as possible to the surrounding teeth. Also, implant dentures are connected to the jawbone, providing stimulation to the bone while chewing and biting. This stimulation helps to maintain health of the bone tissue and prevents atrophy of the bone. This, in turn, ensures that the implants are kept in place and prevents the mouth from having a collapsed appearance, which usually occurs when teeth are missing or some other kind of tooth replacement method is adopted. When the jawbone atrophies, it can also affect the other healthy teeth in gums, causing them to become loose and unstable. Hence, implant-supported dentures also help to preserve the health of neighboring natural teeth.

Procedure for Implant Dentures

The procedure starts with the dentist surgically inserting the implants into the jawbone. This can be done under general anesthesia or deep sedation, which renders the procedure pain, anxiety and discomfort free for the patient. The dentist drills holes into the jawbone (usually four) and then places the implants into these precisely drilled holes. All incisions are sutured up and the patient left to recover. It takes about 20 weeks for the implants to fuse – in a process termed ‘osseointegration’ - with the surrounding hard tissue.

Once the healing and integration of the implants are complete, the Chicago implant dentist attaches the dentures onto the implants. The result: a new set of teeth that looks and feels natural and can’t slip around when eating or speaking! This gives the patient confidence to go about their lives without worrying about their dentures.

Cleaning Implant Dentures

Oral hygiene is of utmost importance. In fact, poor oral hygiene is one of the main reasons for the failure of implant-supported dentures. Implant dentures have to be cleaned just like regular teeth. Patients should brush their teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush and also floss like they used to prior to getting the implants. In addition, patients are taught to use special interdental brushes and how to floss around the abutment. The abutment refers to the part of the implant that extends beyond the gum line and keeps the porcelain crown in place. In addition, using a chlorhexidine rinse can help provide a fresh feeling and further oral hygiene and health.
