Notebook computer, mini laptops, mini computer or notebook are all various names for a small computer which is portable and lightweight and can easily be carried around. The notebook computer has gained tremendous popularity because of its easy mobility, ultra-light weight, friendly interface, slick and smart appearance with many more advanced features when compared to the traditional desktop computer. The added advantage of a notebook is that it consumes less energy and radiates less heat than the standard desktop personal computer and can perform a wide range of tasks with equal ease. Sending e-mails, faxes, listening to music or seeing a video are all possible on this small computer. Various models in this category are available like media-centric, ultra-lightweight or ultra-portable and for general usage or even gaming purposes.

The components of a notebook are so designed as to present a slick, compact appearance in which all the constituents of the computer are fitted in comfortably and the keyboard as well as the screen is integrated as a single unit. The processor is directly mounted without any socket onto the ...
... motherboard so that the computer components can cool off comfortably in order to function at the optimum level. A few of these mini computers do make the use of a desktop CPU to decrease heat radiation. These normally run at a reduced voltage and slower clock speed. Although efficient this does significantly reduce the battery life. Heat spreaders, small fans, heat sinks or pipes are fitted into notebooks to disperse the heat. The expensive models will have cooling channels along the side of the heat pipes to facilitate heat reduction.
A notebook computer basically has four memory types like SDRAM or Single Data Rate Synchronous, DDR SDRAM or Dual Data Rate Synchronous RAM, Proprietary Memory Modules and SODIMM or Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module. Some notebooks have provisions for quick access to data while others enable data to be moved forth between the motherboard and the processor. There are three kinds of drives in a notebook computer like the cold, hot and warm swappable modes. In the cold swappable method, the notebook has to be switched off during the swap whereas in the hot method, the notebook can remain open. The warm swappable mode enables the notebook to stay active while the drive is being changed while the mode itself remains inactive.

Sound cards along with speakers are incorporated in notebook computers and this ensures quality sound. Keen gamers can invest in an additional external sound controller to enhance the sound effects. The notebook screen is LCD and it usually measures between 12 to 17 inches. The Lilon battery is the best recommended to be used in notebook computers as it is light and long-lasting. The other batteries which can be used are the NiCad battery or the NiMh battery.

Along with its advanced features, the affordability of a notebook computer is what makes it fly off from retail shelves!
