Nagaland is a state located in the northeastern portion of India. It is bordered by the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Burma.

Where is Nagaland

The state is mostly hilly and mountainous, with agriculture being the major occupation of the people.

About Nagaland

As per the 2011 census, Nagaland has a total population of 19,80,602. It attained statehood on 1 December 1963 and the major sectors in the state are insurance, tourism, real estate, forestry and cottage industries. Mount Sabarmati, which is one of the highest peaks in India, is also located in the state.

Exploring Nagaland

Nagaland makes huge revenue in the tourism sector. The tourists are given a feel of the exotic culture of the state and the traditions practiced within the tribes. The Touphema Tourist Village is situated on a hillock, around 41 km from Kohima. The village has a large number of resorts, which provide a glimpse of the Naga way of life. It has ...
... a panoramic view and has a very ethnic feel to it, which also provides an insight into Naga history.

The tourists are further taken to cultural expeditions, hunting trips and local homes where local dishes are provided to them. The Hornbill festival is a major festival in the state, and it is held during the first week of December. The festival features the building of a Morung (boy's room) by the Hoho (the tribe leader) and then imparts the value of life. The Nagas do not have totem poles or carvings, but the ceremony gives an authentic idea of their traditions. The festival is also known as Kisama.

The Dzoku Valley is located at a height of 2438.4 m above the sea level and 30 km from Kohima. A vast variety of flowers can be found in the valley; and lilies can be found in many variant colors in the valley. The Valley is considered to be one of the best trekking spots in the northeastern India.

Getting There

Tourists from the cities of Dimapur and Guwahati travel to the airport in Dimapur, which is located nearly 74 km from Kohima. However, the nearest international airport that connects all major cities in the world is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport in Kolkata; it has flights to countries in Europe, Middle East, South East Asia and North America.
The nearest railroad station to the state is the Guwahati railway station.
