Kumbhalgarh is an interesting city and is a Mewar citadel located in the actual area associated with Rajsamand. Kumbhalgarh is also the place where the great king and warrior of Mewar, Maharana Pratap was born. It is a magical and beautiful place situated in the midst of the Rajasthan deserts approximately 105 kilometres away from Udaipur and is known for its historic significance. Kumbhalgarh Fort is a majestic structure located around 82 km from Udaipur city. The fort was built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century and later more structures were added to it until the 19th century. The spherical fortress was built by Rana Kumbha. It contains a magnificent domed palace along the 36km long winding walls that defends the citadel. The fortress is shielded by seven enormous gates. There are around 360 temples within the fort complex, out of which 300 are Jain temples and the remaining ones are Hindu.

Located on the banks of Banas River, the fort is hemmed in by three mountain peaks which add more charm to it. Standing tall at an altitude of 1100 m, the fort has walls extending up to 36 km in length which makes it the third longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China and the Great Wall of Gorgan in Iran.

The palace at the top of the cliff, known as Badal Mahal is a two-storied structure divided into two interconnected but distinct portions, the Zanana and the Mardana Mahal. The palace is elaborately decorated with oil paintings. The Zanana Mahal is provided with stone jalis which enabled the queens to see the court proceedings and other events.

The Neelkanth Mahadeo Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is also close to the fortress. The six foot high stone Lingam is revered and maintained by the locals. The king was beheaded by his son as he prayed in the temple. Tourists can also visit Vedi Temple, a sacrificial temple built by Rana Kumbha dedicated to his sacrifice. It is a three storied Jain temple situated near the fort.
