How All On 4 Implants Make New Teeth In A Day Possible, Part 1

Getting a brand new set of teeth placed in a single day may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but the introduction of new and more sophisticated dental implant procedures has actually made this a reality! By “new teeth” we are not referring to removable dentures or false teeth – the traditional approach to treating patients who have lost most or all of their original adult teeth. Rather, we are talking about teeth that are fixed permanently in the mouth and that are virtually indistinguishable – in fit, function, feel and aesthetics – from a complete set of natural teeth. All on 4 Implants are the technology that makes this possible.
How?
The Challenges Facing Traditional Dental Implant Techniques
In order to understand how the “All-on-4” protocol works, you need to appreciate the shortcomings of traditional dental implant procedures. And one of the biggest of these challenges is bone loss in the jaw. When the roots of the teeth are lost and left without replacement, the underlying bone tissue atrophies and shrinks, resulting in a change in the shape and volume of the jawbone (see image ...
... above). This is why people who wear dentures age faster in appearance than those who still have their original teeth or have had missing teeth replaced with dental implants.
This loss of bone volume not only results in premature aging of one’s natural youthful facial contours, it also compromises a patient’s candidacy for dental implants. Implants, just like your natural teeth, require a certain amount of bone volume to be present in order to remain successfully and sturdily rooted in the jaw. Many of the patients that do come for dental implants have been toothless or have been wearing removable dentures for many years and so have lost a substantial amount of bone volume in the jaw.
The conventional approach to dealing with this problem was to perform bone grafting surgery: an invasive, painful and expensive surgery that requires several months of healing before the jaw is ready to accept implants. So you see, using traditional dental implant techniques, patients are already forced to undergo a traumatic surgery and wait four to six months before they are even able to get new teeth. And this is only the start of the long journey.
How Do All on 4 Implants Overcome These Challenges?
The “All on 4” involves the very precise placement and angulation of four dental implants per jaw. These implants are used to support a customized prosthetic dental bridge, which looks and functions like a complete set of teeth (see image above). A Computed Tomography (CT) scanner is used to provide the dentist with an uncompromised 3D view of a patient’s jawbone and tooth orientation, as well as the positioning of all the vital oral structures, including the sinus cavity in the upper jaw, the nerve canal in the lower jaw and all major blood vessels.
Armed with this detailed treatment plan, the positions of four dental implant sites can be selected so as to reap maximum support from the existing bone volume in the jaw, while, at the same time, minimizing the risk of complications. In other words, implant dentists can almost always proceed with implant placement without the need for bone grafting surgery first, even in cases of advanced bone loss in the jaw.
By skipping bone grafting surgery, patients are not only saved the tens of thousands of dollars this procedure costs, they are also saved the many painful months it would take for their jawbones to heal before they can receive dental implants. But, this is just one of the reasons the “All on 4” makes it possible for patients to literally get a new set of teeth in one day.
