Getting an entry level job in IT
To get an entry level job in IT, first thing that you need to do is to get certified.
Get certified
Number of modern professionals is of the view that low-level certifications like CompTIA A+ have become obsolete. And that is where lots of job hunters are forgoing formal certification and instead going for degree programs or hands-on experience.
This is not the correct way of thinking. Although, having experience and degrees are beneficial, but getting and maintaining professional certifications give IT companies an impression that you are giving your hundred percent when it comes to becoming an IT professional.
If you manage to get higher-level certifications such as Network+, Microsoft Certified Professional and Server+, it will make your task easier to get an entry level IT job.
And, similar to a degree, a certification assures an IT company that you have a proper understanding of your work area. Employers prefers these sorts of candidates when offering entry level IT job as they do not need to waste their resources.
Stay current
A certification ...
... or degree can become worthless almost as quickly a PC can. You may have all the necessary documents that show you possess a right kind of tools, but if you lack knowledge of latest happenings in the field of IT, companies will figure it out quite quickly.
So even though you have no issues with your 800MHz clunker, it is of utmost importance that you keep a tab on the latest concepts and technologies if you want to make a mark in this field. There is a strong possibility that interviewers are going to ask you questions pertaining to current events in IT sector. If you have no idea in this regard, get ready to face rejection.
Good news for you is that getting an idea of latest technologies is quite straightforward these days, thanks to all the magazines and websites related to IT.
How to quit your job without burning bridges
At some point of time, you are going to leave your current job. It can be your decision or your boss. Whatever be the case, it is quite important that it does not have a negative impact on the relationship between two of you.
Taking into consideration the current economic climate and the wave of job cuts that has swept US, there is not much of a surprise that some of the frustrated employees are not following the conventional routines when it comes to quitting time.
Keep in mind that burning bridges between your former boss and company is not going to be advantageous for you, even if it gives you satisfaction for a small time frame.
To quit your job without burning bridges, make sure that you follow below mentioned steps.
• First and foremost, give fifteen days notice. Both your past and future employer is going to be quite happy with this.
• It is always a good idea to explain that you are leaving because your growth is going to be much quicker with the new company. There is no dissatisfaction on your part.
• On your final day, write your boss a thank you letter through e-mail, explaining how much you have enjoyed your stay.
• If possible, offer to train your substitute. This will create a positive impression on the mind of your boss.
• It is your responsibility to ensure that your work is caught up before you leave and write notes, if necessary, to inform and guide your substitute.
• If you have external clients, interact with your boss on how to transition them to your substitute.
• When telling clients you are leaving the company, it is of paramount importance that you say only positive things regarding the company.
• Let them know you are just leaving the job and not finishing the relationships you have developed.
It can be really very hard to put in your hundred percent for those extra 15 days when you have a new lucrative job offer in hand but it’s worth it if it is going to have a positive impact on your professional side of thing.
