Larnaca is re-built over the ancient city of Kittium which was once a foremost centre for copper trade. It is the oldest surviving city of Cyprus. Larnaca Fort was constructed between 1382 and 1398 to protect the Larnaca’s harbour. The British had used this Fort as a prison. The rooms have now been transformed into a museum.

These buildings are now the popular city museums, namely, the Palaeontology museum, the City-Museum and the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art.
