Introduction

Horse racing is an emerging sport industry in India with lots of positives about it that promises the glory of this sport in the coming future. Similar to other sports the Horse racing comes with its own terminology. One should know the basics of the game and the terms related with it before betting on the Horse races or before trying to mix with the excitement which comes along with this game.

If you are visiting a racetrack or a racecourse for first time then it is pretty much possible that you will find the language spoken by many people over there as a foreign language. Without knowing the terms used in Indian Horse Racing and the terms related to the betting procedure a visit to a racecourse can be a pain to you. Let us have a deeper look into the Horse racing terminology.

The Basic Terms Related To Racing

• All The Way Win – To lead the race from starting and finishing first without losing the lead throughout the race.
• Apprentice – A jockey with less than 45 wins or less than a year in the racing industry. Horses ridden by apprentices are allowed to carry 5 pounds ...

• Back Marker – In a handicapped racing event the Horse which is the greatest handicap distance to travel is known as the Back Marker.
• Conditions Race – A race where the Horses carry the same weight according to sex according to the regulations. Penalty can be imposed if weight is added for previously won races.
• Derby – One of the most common types of racing event which involves three year old pacer or trotter.
• False Start – The starter of the race has the power to declare a false start and restart the race if he feels that any Horse or rider has not got a fair start due to any reason.
• Jog – The Horse when pacing or trotting at leisure pace is known as Jogging.
• Leader – The Horse which is leading the race. Also applicable to a Horse which usually wins the race when once in leading position.
• Maiden – A Horse which has not yet registered a win in any of the race.
• Pacer – A Horse that moves it both legs at one side at the same time.
• Punter – A person who bets in small amounts or has very less experience on betting in Horse races.
• Race Call – The commentary of the whole race starting from the starting positions of Horses, any major event in race, all the moves and other descriptions till the end of race.
• Spelling Paddock – Name given to the resting place of Horses taking a spell or break from the race or before the race.
• Stallion – term used to define a male Horse which has been retired from racing and is used at stables for bredding purposes.
