With the New Year upon us, much is expected to happen in January in relation to the GD. The ECO carbon trading platform was launched in December and there are already a few hundred trades on the system. At GDM we are seeing an increasing number of clients with ECO projects to start this year.

So how do you, as an installer, obtain ECO funding? The first thing to do is to identify the properties that are eligible for funding. These will be tenanted by householders with a combined income of £15,800 per annum or less, on benefits, or in CSCO areas. So the key is to identify those properties in your area and put together a detailed list of their addresses and tenant status.

Before you, as an installer, can undertake the work, you will need to become PAS 2030 compliant or a 'Green Deal Installer'. This is achieved by embedding a Quality Management System in your company and becoming familiar with the policies and procedures outlined in the PAS 2030 itself.

You will then need to arrange for an inspection by one of the dozen or so accredited Green Deal certification bodies. Currently there is about a 4 week lead ...
... -in time for the Cert. bodies. Once you have arranged for the inspection, they will come down to your head office and inspect the Quality Management System first and then visit a completed installation in the measures you want to undertake.

Once approved as a Green Deal Installer you will be put on the list maintained by the GD 'Oversight Registration Body' - Gemserv. This allows for Green Deal Providers to find you and commission you for ECO or Green Deal work.

There is a lot of talk about External Wall Insulation being the greatest growth area for ECO and GD but we believe that simpler measures such as boiler swaps and loft and cavity insulation will be extremely prevalent under both schemes. This is through conversations with a couple of the big 6 energy companies in the last few weeks. They believe there are more cost effective ways of achieving their obligations than by way of EWI.

So what is the Green Deal going to bring us in 2013?. We firmly believe that ECO will provide a huge upsurge in both the volume and quality of energy efficiency measures. So happy new year and heres to a prosperous one in the industry.
